Winter Wear: Cold Weather Styles for Kids

My Kindergartner recently wrote his first story. Albeit a challenge to decipher, it’s about leaves. “They sound like chips when you step on them” he proudly declared. This sweet five-year-old perspective will stick with me forever. Kids are meant to always play outside. Their minds and bodies grow while they race across the asphalt and when they conquer the next big tree; alongside observing their world and the simple things, like the sound of leaves beneath their feet.

New York City has had a pretty mild Fall, but the official shift to cold weather is practically here. I like to layer the kids in the wintertime.  Sometimes classrooms are hot but outside air is shockingly brisk.  It simplifies things when clothes mix-and-match well, and we turned to P.S. from Aéropostale again this season to help the little ones conquer the cold.

I like the simplicity of being able to shop online for unique and on-trend clothing for my kids without the hefty price tag.

Just Like Daddy

He steps into his daddy’s shoes and stumbles throughout our home.  It’s endearing to see him identify so strongly with his father.  And hear that four-year-old sweet voice, beam with pride.

When I grow up, I’m gonna build houses too, but I’ll still like toys and playing with mini robots. When I grow up, I want to be me – just like Dada.

I love to dress up my little gent whenever I have the chance and the latest spring styles sent to us from Florsheim Kids make him look like quite the little man! We adore the Flights Wing Jr inspired by dad’s favorite wingtips and the Quinlan Jr suede boys chukka boots.  The pops of colored-outsole options add modern fun to classic styles.  While comfortable craftsmanship brings style and function to active little feet.

Dad will want the grownup versions too.

Magic In a Dress || Sunday Swoon

This time of year always makes me nostalgic.  We unpack handmade nursery school ornaments, and the children sing carols while decorating the tree.  The imperfections that mesh together real-life Christmas in our home are incredibly special.  The sort of special that makes me weepy.

Time passage.  It’s mind boggling.

As in every year, we quickly de-Christmased to mark the birthday of our big girl. Seven whole years this time around.  My goodness. Five years ago, on her second birthday, I’ll never forgot how she cried when it was time to take off her party dress.  So much has changed as she is truly coming into her own – but she still very much holds onto her love of dresses.  She finds joy in a twirl and brings creativity to dress up.

I think it’s magic.

Pippa and Julie dresses

She was completely smitten when a beautiful box of dresses arrived from Pippa & Julie – a New York-based girlswear line designed and owned by a mother-daughter duo.  Perfect for twirling, special outings – and being seven (seven!).

The Steps They Follow || Sunday Swoon

It’s natural for children to want to emulate their parents.  The little guy wants to be a builder just like his dada.  While the big girl’s many aspirations include being a writer alongside mama.  It’s endearing to catch the kids step into our shoes as they traipse all over the house, play-acting their grown-up roles.  Their hearts desires and little games serve as a reminder of the incredible responsibility we hold as parents.

We must choose our own steps so carefully and soundly because two sets of little feet are trailing right behind us.

The kiddos were recently sent shoes from UmiQuiltee B II boots for the big girl and Moabb B for our sweet boy – comprised of umi-tex water-resistant, breathable materials.  My husband and I thought that they looked like little versions of shoes that we would select for ourselves, in the most child appropriate ways.  We also marveled in how GROWN UP the kids both look in their sophisticated footwear.

We’re keen on savoring their little-hood for a lot longer.

And are pleased that their new polished kicks will take them through the serious work of childhood.  Because puddle jumping, snow ball making and hill rolling are of the utmost importance.

Back To School Styles with OshKosh B’gosh

On my first trip back to my childhood home, as a new mother, my own mama brought down a carefully packaged box from the attack.  It was a vintage treasure trove full of lovely handmade dresses, special favorites strewn with memories and a few retro OshKosh B’gosh pieces that my future toddlers would someday wear.

When I was invited to create a video with OshKosh over the summer, I was thrilled to work with a brand so nostalgic of my own childhood. Rooted in the belief that clothing should allow kids to have fun being kids – I was eager to recently learn about their timeless yet trend-relevant back-to-school styles.

I couldn’t resist the iconic overall look on my kiddos who haven’t donned overalls since toddlerhood. I adore the camo-theme on both boys and girls and the fitted, minimally rhinestone encrusted denim on my daughter.  It was simple to create head-to-toe looks and I even found a sibling-sharable boy’s denim jacket.

I believe in collaborating with brands who give back and OshKosh B’Gosh Jeanius Campaign has partnered with KIDS and Donorschoose.org to help local, kids, teacher and schools thrive. From now until September 17th, donate a new pair of jeans or make a cash donation and OshKosh will match all denim donations with another item of clothing.  In addition, all cash donations will be matched, up to $50K.

Since the majority of our kid’s items are passed on to family, it seamed fitting to share OshKosh kids style advice with my sister-in-law, a mama of two-boys who happens to share a love of kid’s fashion (and great deals!).  Check out the OshKosh top 10 trends for Back-to-School and grab the below 25% coupon for extra savings!

Back to School Cool with p.s. from aéropostale

The other day, when I was in a local craft store with my daughter we found ourselves smack in the middle of a Halloween display.  She captured my sentiments perfectly when she yelled “THIS IS BANANAS – you need to tell them it’s SUMMER!!!

We still have a lot of warm-weather fun to pack in before the autumn breezes head our way, but preparing for back-to-school ahead of time saves my sanity in the long run. Last month, we introduced our partnership with p.s. from aéropostale and their back-to-school collections are just as amazing as their summer options.  We love their interpretation of the animal trend for girls and their layering options for boys are comfortable, stylish and well made. The accessories are among my favorites too!

For now, I’d like to think of these great fall finds as perfect summer layering options.  And when the time comes they will keep my little ones stylishly warm too.  p.s. from aéropostale  now features helpful community boards in stores featuring style inspiration and even a craft of the month.  I sometimes shop in the boys department for my daughter and appreciate their 2 ways – 2 wear suggestions.  I picked up the above hats for both kiddos in the boys section and happen to adore the not-too-matchy-matchy yet unified look!
