City Strolling with the Joovy Groove Ultralight

Our days require a lot of walking.  And although inclement weather can be a challenge to navigate with children – I love the unexpected that comes with weaving in and out of city streets.  Block by block, from backstreets to parks – there is always an unnoticed architectural detail to take in – or a new neighborhood to explore.  And children have an innate way of making me notice things that I would otherwise overlook.

I still often depend on an umbrella stroller for long days with my preschooler, and Joovy’s new and improved Groove Ultralight has allowed me to take my son along on heavily scheduled days of traipsing all over New York City.  At just 12.78 pounds it suits our on-the-go lifestyle and the fresh new jade color is a welcomed step away from my typical black-gear color preference.

I’ve been through several strollers over the past six years and the Joovy Groove Ultralight provides a few standout features that are worthy of noting.  The over-sized canopy provides excellent coverage from the sun and I appreciate the peak-in window to check if the boy is sleeping.  The seat is long and plush with an adjustable footrest and the multi-position recline makes for comfortable napping.  I also happen to love the seat’s storage pockets for little ones to secure their drinks and toys while feeling in charge of their own belongings.

The underseat basket is roomy (just be mindful of the five pound limit) and the back cupholder works well with a small closed water bottle.  The zippered pocket beneath the cupholder provides a secure place to stash away a bit of cash or keys – and the shoulder carry strap is convenient for schlepping up and down subway steps.  One of my favorite features is the stroller’s auto fold lock – which makes for quick and easy transports when collapsing the stroller for taxi rides.

I had a bit of an adjustment period with the handlebars which at first felt high for my shrimpie frame, yet perfect for my tall husband.  At times, I also felt massive sidewalk bumps cumbersome to navigate – which served as a reminder to ALWAYS strap my adventurous little one in.  But I also have a tendency to use my strollers like all-terrain vehicles – and the Groove Ultralight has proven to be perfect for paved sidewalks and smooth travels.
