On Comfort Zones and Filming a Commercial With The Home Depot

Consideration provided by The Home Depot via Mode Media.

There’s something to be said about stepping out of one’s comfort zone. In what almost feels like a former life, challenge was a constant. As a springboard diver; a new undergrad who took a vacation to Hawaii and didn’t get on that plane back home; a twenty-something year old who tried to conquer surfing (despite never being good at it) – the list goes on.  Motherhood, of course, presents a new set of mind-blowing challenges, with pieces of your heart literally running around outside of your body – that said, perhaps caution set in with the passing of years.  And so I’ve been trying to examine and challenge the ways in which I push myself both personally and professionally – and when an opportunity to film a commercial with The Home Depot came my way, I hung up my reservations and gave it a go.

The funny thing is that as a builders’ wife I spend more time at our local Home Depot than I suppose I’d like to.  I tend to discuss all brand opportunities with my husband when determining if they resonate as a good fit, and he seriously tried to sell their Pergo Outlast+ flooring to me!  No persuasion needed, as the idea of leaving a spill for up to twenty four hours (without visible liquid damage) makes me want these sort of floors in my home. And just like my role in the commercial, I’m often the one to blame for the spills. Whoopsy Daisy!

It’s definitely a trip to see my head pop up in the ads in my sidebar, and I’ve greatly appreciated the support among other writers who reached out to let me know that the commercial has been circulating in their website ads.  Although I’m far from Emmy material – I’m glad that I joined in this cool experience and had a look at the inner workings of production and all that goes into the filming process. It’s a ton! Thanks to team MODE and Home Depot for being so kind and supportive. Catch the full video below!

Forever Summer (OshKosh B’gosh Giveaway)

Today marks our first full week of summer vacation.  We’ll be greeting the mornings at a slower pace and enjoying the fluidity of unscheduled days and spontaneous adventures.  I’m looking forward to fistfuls of tiny wilted flowers and piles of paintings – and the light in little faces as they imagine and explore.  Motherhood continually proves that the simple things build upon the most meaningful memories of early childhood.  And I hope that my kids will recall the unabashed fun of being wild and free and together during our forever summers.

We were invited by OshKosh B’gosh to capture a 75 second glimpse of our forever summer and are excited to be featured on their Forever Summer homepage this week.  OshKosh was a staple in my own 80’s childhood and they continue to stay true to their origins of creating comfortable, thoughtful designs that celebrate childhood by allowing kids to be kids.

Like OshKosh, we believe in the importance of play – and my online order proved to be well-suited for my imaginative, active children (and their mama who happens to love mini-style). The graphic tees were practically made for my boy (he is such a dude and he loves pizza!)  and I’ve received a bunch of questions about the embroidered dress that Lucia selected. It’s details like the soft cotton-contrasting waist material on my son’s shorts and the durability and sweet accents on the swimsuits that make B’gosh garments special.

In addition to affordable summer essentials (find a store near you here!), the OshKosh’s Forever Summer Homepage provides weekly tips, crafts and recipes for moms like me aiming to make the most of our summer staycations.

We were thrilled that OshKosh introduced us to the incredible GoPro Hero3 and several supporting accessories to capture video from the children’s unique perspective.  Although GoPro is well known among extreme athletes – I’d argue that it should hold a prime spot on baby registries.  I mounted the camera to the kids’ helmets and strapped it to their chest to record continual motion from an interesting birds-eye view.  I also clamped it to vehicles and playground equipment with one of my favorite accessories – the jaws flex clamp.  Our video reflects a glimpse of our summertime in the city and the wonder inherent in being a kid.  From Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn and Manhattan playgrounds, to the reconstructed Rockaway boardwalk in Queens – there is great fun to be found in our own magnificent city.

Win It: Visit OshKosh to view our feature and helpful summer staycation resources – and enter to win a $50 OshKosh B’Gosh Gift Card by visiting the below rafflecopter.  U.S. only please and a winner will be announced on the widget in one week.  Wishing you all a beautiful Forever Summer!
