Why We’re Obsessed With Disney’s First Latina Princess: Elena Of Avalor

Giving young Disney fans the ability to see themselves in the media that they love is always a positive thing, and we’re thrilled that Disney has officially introduced their first Latina Princess; Princess Elena of Avalor.

Inspired by diverse Latina culture, this 16-year-old princess is strong, resilient, bold and funny; embodying the sort of princesa that I’m happy to have my eight-year-old daughter look up too.  I had the chance to learn all about her at the Disney SMMC conference and how her strong traits are perfectly aligned with Disney’s new Dream Big Princess campaign.  With her own books, animated TV series, and doll; Princess Elena of Avalor will also hold court at Walt Disney World Resort this August and at Disneyland Resort this fall.  We’re thrilled for all the young Disney fans who will now be able to see themselves as relevant, important and special – through the creation of Princess Elena.  What a great addition to Disney’s multicultural line-up of heroines!  Find out more about why we love Princess Elena and all that she stands for over on MODE.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Battle For The Book

This post is sponsored by Disney Junior. Thanks for supporting the stories that make Marino Bambinos possible.

Ahoy Mateys!  Jake and his crew of swashbuckling pirates were among the first characters to capture my little boy’s interest.

Mama even made him a Jake and the Never Land Pirates costume to fully inhabit his favorite friendly pirate.

Given his interest, we are thrilled to work with our friends at Disney Junior to help spread the word about their upcoming Disney Junior Family Night Special Event!  Jake and the Never Land Pirates Battle for the Book will premiere on the Disney Channel this Sunday, October 26th, at 6pm EST.

To stir up excitement for special family TV night, Disney Junior surprised our little guy with a fun creative task of  building an epic adventure with an amazing Jake and the Never Land Pirates LEGO® DUPLO® set.

Jake and the Neverland Pirates LEGO DUPLO

Our friendly pirate has been known to disassemble his big sister’s LEGO® Friends sets in a hot minute and express frustration when attempting to rebuild.  That’s why age-appropriate LEGO® DUPLO® sets are perfect for my pre-schooler.   The chunky pieces are easy for his four-year-old hands to manipulate and his confidence soars when following the enclosed directions with my guidance.

We had a really special time building and telling stories together.

Jake’s pirate ship has since been on daily living room adventures to save Never Land.  And guess what? It even has a working cannon (AKA little boy’s dream!).

Jake and the Never Land Pirates epic battle build

Disney Junior is encouraging all kids to join in Jake’s Epic Battle Build by using their LEGO® DUPLO® sets to story-tell and create Jake and the Never Land Pirate adventures.  Parents – simply share an image of your child’s LEGO® DUPLO® creations and story on facebook to enter to win exciting prizes in the Epic Battle Build Sweepstakes including an Ultimate LEGO® DUPLO® Prize Pack.

Yo ho ho Mateys!

DIY Jake and The Never Land Pirates Costume

It’s been a while since I’ve made something for the boy! The girl still loves the butterfly fairy costume that I made her, and I’m pretty sure that she’ll wear her Queen Elsa costume until it disintegrates.  It’s clearly time to start building up my little man’s homemade dress-up options and our recent fun with Disney Live gave me the perfect opportunity to whip up a Jake Costume.

I decided to include Adrian in the process and told him about our upcoming trip to the theater at Madison Square Garden.  When I asked him if he would like a Jake costume he responded with a resounding “YES MAMA!!”. He was super excited and invested in every part of the process.

The costume creation was a quick and simple project, and came together the afternoon before the show.  I used this great Frontier Vest Tutorial to make the Jake vest and changed it up a bit.  Instead of using felt strips as edging I purchased 2.75m Double Fold Quilt Binding (because I was too lazy to cut strips of felt!).  It worked out well – just be mindful of your corners and curves.  I didn’t fold over the front pattern piece, when cutting the felt, where indicated – and made it into a folded lapel as seen on Jake.  The lapel was stitched in place to keep from folding forward and I added four shiny brass buttons (circles of felt or yellow buttons will also work).   I cut the neck of one of Lucia’s old white shirts into a slight V and used one of her old tap shoe strings to lace it up.  The headband and black cummerbund were made out of old clothing as well.  I bought yellow plastic tape at the hardware store and tapped a strip onto Adrian’s favorite Ugg boots.  Daddy made him a cardboard sword and he was good to go!

In other monumental news, the girl decided to dress up as a pirate (instead of a princess) for a Pirate and Princess themed show! Her love of princesses has always been intermixed with other good stuff but this mama inwardly cheered on her costume choice!  We pulled the Izzy look together with an inside-out pink T-shirt, a cut up mitten on a string (sorry Adrian, it was about time you stopped wearing those “lobster” mittens) and a play tablecloth around her head.

Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure Review

Disney Magic made its way over to NYC once again and my family was thrilled to check out their latest tristate show: Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure.

I let the kiddos in on the exciting news this time and even whipped out my sewing machine to make my little guy a Jake costume.  Lucia quickly put together an Izzy outfit and we were off to Madison Square Garden to see the kiddos enjoy Disney favorites including Doc Mc Stuffins, Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates.

Madison Square Garden

As mentioned in previous Disney on Ice posts – there is so much joy in experiencing Disney shows through the eyes of excited little ones.  The interactive production encourages audience participation, and viewers (both big and small) cheered and sang along throughout the show.

Disney Junior Live Pirate and Princess Adventure

Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure begins with a fun Doc McStuffins pre-show, followed by a trip to the magical Enchancia, where Sofia and friends prep for the annual friendship festival. Even Cinderella makes a special visit.

With a little Jake by my side – it was thrilling to cast away to Never Land where Jake and his pirate crew search for a mysterious treasure-filled volcano.  Peter Pan makes a special appearance and pixie dust and flying ensue.

With plenty of appearances from Mickey and Minnie, stunning costumes and spectacular effects, Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure, is a memorable special-event for the whole family.

Visit disneyjuniorlive.com to learn more – tickets for the Madison Square Garden show are still available until 4/21.

As a Feld Family Ambassador, my family received tickets.  Opinions, as always, are my own.

Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure

Disney on Ice made my children implode with excitement, and we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Disney and share details on their latest tri-state show: Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure

Dinsey Junior Live Pirates and Princess Adventure

This exciting production launched a 103-city national tour in July 2013 and features characters from the smash hits Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates.    Tickets are currently available for purchase for the New York and New Jersey area performances at Nassau Coliseum (April 3 – 4) IZOD Center (April 5 – 6), Westchester County Center (April 10 – 13) and The Theater at Madison Square Garden (April 17 – 21).

Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure begins with a special interactive pre-show featuring the beloved 6-year-old doctor to toys, Doc McStuffins.  Children and their parents will sing “The Check-Up Song” along with Doc as she provides tender love and care.  Mickey and Minnie also lead viewers on a thrilling adventure that will have families cheering for their favorite pirate (Jake) and Disney’s first little girl princess (Sofia).

Audiences will then venture on a journey to the magical world of Enchancia, where Sofia, her step-siblings Amber and James, and the entire kingdom are preparing for the annual friendship festival. Sofia has the honor of delivering the perfect gift to her royal subjects at the celebration where Cinderella visits to help Sofia in her mission to find the perfect gift.

The thrills continues when families cast away to Never Land where Jake and his Yo-Ho pirate friends Izzy and Cubby are in a race against time to locate a mysterious treasure-filled volcano.  Danger and excitement lurk around every turn when swashbuckling friends battle Captain Hook for the ultimate prize. Peter Pan makes a special appearance, aiding the team in their heroic quest – and with the help of Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, Jake and his crew fly above the stage in their journey.
