As summer months are fleeting, I find myself saying yes to my children more than ever. Even when I’m exhausted and would prefer to stay on some semblance of our typical family rhythm. One extra trip to the playground sprinklers; an additional evening sidewalk chalk fiasco; and extra time with our feet in the sand add the sort of twinkle to my children’s eyes that I only wish I could bottle. It’s the most minuscule things that truly make their day.
Our days are incredible full, and this summer has been a hot one. The people closest to me know that I’m a bit neurotic about hydration – especially in the summer. I started drinking Vita Coco coconut water occasionally last summer when it was recommended to me by my chiropractor as an effective and healthy way to hydrate after migraines (and prevent them as dehydration is one of my biggest triggers). My inseparable sidekick (then 2-year-old Adrian) started drinking it on occasion too, and he was quite particular about his brand of “coco-wawa”: Vita Coco. So when I was contacted to have my family test out Vita Coco Kids, their new line of health-minded drinks for children – it seemed fitting.
We are a water drinking family, but my children are obsessed with juice. We don’t have it in our home as some children’s juice boxes (even the organic varieties) are packed with sugar contents comparable to hefty desserts – clearly not the sort of stuff that I want to nourish my growing children with. Vita Coco Kids has only 8 grams of sugar and 35 calories per 6 fl. oz drink, which is substantially less than most other children’s beverages. It contains fresh coconut water (not from concentrate), vitamin C and electrolytes. It is free of artificial sweeteners and is packaged in Tetra Pak, and eco and socially responsible form of packaging comprised of a sustainable source of wood fiber.
I assumed that Lucia would love Vita Coco Kids, but was skeptical about Adrian’s reaction as he has been partial to the unflavored Vita Coco variety. Clearly, I was wrong, he guzzled down his Apple Island flavor even faster than his sister. My kids loved all three flavors, Apple Island, Paradise Punch and Very Cherry Beach and thanked me profusely for their new tasty drinks. On hot days when my children are constantly exerting energy, I’m definitely willing to break the straight water regime with nutrient-dense and electrolyte-filled Vita Coco Kids. I’m also happy that it provides potassium, a nutrient that my banana-shunning children are most likely lacking in.
Vita Coco Kids will be available at major retailers nationwide, including Target and Amazon for $4.99 per pack of six, 6fl. oz drinks.
